Knossos Amphora vase with lilies

This beautiful sample of ancient Minoan art is inspired by the mural of Knossos Palace where blooming lilies were the central theme of the King’s throne hall. Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. The amphorae were one of many shapes used in Ancient Greek vase painting.
The decoration and paint of these amphorae had their origins in everyday activities and in nature. Lilies were among the most beloved themes used for decoration, and they can be found on murals in Knossos and Santorini, as well as on gold pieces of jewelry. White lilies symbolized the symmetry of divine creation and man’s desire for perfection.
This vase features three blooming lilies with the detail of a bird on a black background, which gives an almost three-dimensional feel to the space where the vase is placed. It is a one-of-a-kind and rare find.
It’s handmade and hand-painted in Greece using traditional techniques and ecological colors.
