Kamares ware Pyxis with a spiral
This Pyxis, an ancient Greek jewelry box, takes inspiration from the Kamares Ware. The Kamares cave, located near Faestos and discovered in 1864, is an archaeological site of the ancient Minoan civilization on Crete, where some of the finest examples of Middle Minoan pottery have been found. Kamares ware is characterized by light-on-dark abstract and floral patterns, as well as elegant shapes. These shapes were crafted on a fast-spinning potter’s wheel, a new invention during the Middle Minoan era. The painted decoration of Kamares ware is particularly labor-intensive, requiring a dark background color, typically black, with white, and sometimes red and orange colors added. The overall effect of Kamares ware is not merely a pretty pot, but rather an object that is a wonder to behold, both inventive and delicate, full of movement and charm.
The ancient Greek motif of the spiral symbolizes growth and the continuity of life. The spiral is said to help our consciousness accept life’s evolution and changes.
The Pyxis can be used as a jewelry case, or to store personal items.
It is handmade and hand-painted in Greece using traditional techniques and ecological colors.
