Kamares ware Pyxis with spirals

Kamares ware is a type of ceramic very common during the Minoan Age, named after the Kamares cave where it was first discovered. These ceramics are renowned for their intricate, abstract, and floral designs, as well as their elegant shapes, which were made possible by the newly-invented fast-spinning potter’s wheel. The process of painting Kamares ware is particularly labor-intensive, involving a dark background color, usually black, on which white, red, and orange colors are added to create stunning and dynamic designs.
Kamares wares were produced in the potteries of the Knossos and Phaistos palace complexes and became a sought-after commodity across the entire eastern Mediterranean and Egypt. These ceramics were often decorated with complex curvilinear designs inspired by the natural world.
