The Bird-catcher plate – God Dionysus

The so-called “Plate Bird-catcher,” an Ionian black-figure plate.
Made in eastern Greece around 550 BC and now exhibited at the Louvre Museum.
The plate depicts a hunting scene with the god Dionysus in the center, surrounded by a rich vegetal background of flowering vineyards.

Dionysus, also known as Bacchus, the god of wine and revelry, was beloved and highly regarded by humans. He was the son of the almighty Zeus and the mortal daughter of King Cadmus of Thebes, Semele.
According to myth, Dionysus is depicted as a mature man with long beards and long robes made of panther or deer skin. Most of the time, he appears wrapped in vines and ivy. Other times, he appears as a young man with little clothing and no beard. That is why he is often referred to as the “eternal adolescent of the gods.

The plate is a hand-painted work of art produced in Greece. It’s ready to be hung on your wall or added to your collection!
