Panathenaic Amphora, runners

This fragment is a detail from a Panathenaic amphora that is exhibited in the Civico Museum of Bologna, in Italy. The Panathenaic Games, held every four years in Athens in honor of the goddess Athena (the patron deity of the city in ancient times), were a religious festival that incorporated ceremony, cultural events, and athletic competitions. The prizes of the games were large ceramic vessels called Panathenaic amphorae, which were filled with olive oil and had sacramental value dedicated to the patron deity. Their decoration follows the same tradition that has been passed down for centuries: On the main side, the goddess Athena, and on the other a scene from the event for which they were an award. In the ancient world, these amphorae-prizes were very valuable and sought after due to their excellent decoration and high symbolism.
