Minoan plate with an octopus

Handmade decorative plate ready to hang on your wall or add to your collection. It depicts a sea-themed vessel from the ancient Greek Minoan civilization found in the palace of Knossos.

The Minoan civilization developed in Crete during the Bronze Age and Iron Age (approximately 3000 BC – 1100 BC) and left behind a rich cultural legacy, including intricately decorated ceramic vessels.

One of the most frequent and widespread symbols used in Minoan art and decoration was the octopus, often depicted with its tentacles crossing the surface of a vessel. Archaeologists suggest that the octopus symbolized the ancient Minoans’ ability to adapt to new conditions and environments, as well as happiness, prosperity, and success. Other interpretations suggest the representation of the deity of the sea or the god Poseidon.
