Kamares ware tray with whirling motifs

This Kamares wares tray is one of the most beautiful objects ever found by archaeologists. The Kamares wares represent some of the most exquisite ceramics from the Minoan Age. They are named after the Kamares cave, their initial place of discovery. Kamares ware is distinguished by its light-on-dark abstract and floral patterns, as well as its elegant shapes. These shapes were meticulously crafted using a fast-spinning potter’s wheel, a groundbreaking invention during the Middle Minoan era.
The painted decoration of Kamares ware is remarkably labor-intensive. It involves using a dark background color, usually black, upon which white, and sometimes red and orange, colors are skillfully added. The resulting effect of Kamares ware is not merely that of a pretty ceramic, but rather a captivating marvel. It is inventive, delicate, and teeming with movement and charm.
Kamares wares were produced in the potteries of the Knossos and Phaistos palace complexes, and they were exported throughout the entire Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt. These ceramics were typically adorned with intricate curvilinear designs inspired by the natural world.”

This tray is handmade and hand-painted in Greece using traditional techniques and ecological colors.
