Kamares ware big cup
The Kamares wares are among the most beautiful types of ceramics from the Minoan Age. These colorful ceramics are named after the Kamares cave where they were first discovered. Kamares ware is characterized by light-on-dark abstract and floral patterns and elegant shapes. These shapes were crafted on a fast-spinning potter’s wheel, a new invention during the Middle Minoan era. The painted decoration of Kamares ware is particularly labor-intensive, requiring a dark background color, usually black, on which white and sometimes red and orange colors were added. The overall effect of Kamares ware is not just a pretty ceramic but a wonder to behold. It is inventive, delicate, and full of movement and charm.
Kamares wares were made in the potteries of the Knossos and Phaistos palace complexes and were exported across the entire eastern Mediterranean and Egypt. These ceramics were usually decorated with complex curvilinear designs inspired by the natural world.
This cup is handmade and hand-painted in Greece using traditional techniques and ecological colors.
