Dove miniature

The dove was a popular subject in antiquity and was especially beloved by children. According to myth, Peristera (literally “dove” in ancient Greek) was a nymph in the entourage of the goddess Aphrodite. She was transformed into a dove for interfering with a game between Aphrodite and the god Eros: One day, Aphrodite and Eros were gathering flowers together and decided to compete on who would gather more. The goddess was letting Eros win but Peristera ran to help her. Aphrodite won, and angry Eros turned the nymph into a dove. Aphrodite however, made it her favourite bird and symbol.
