Ancient Attic Pyxis with horses

This masterpiece is one of the Pyxises, which were jewelry boxes made of clay, very common in Ancient Greek everyday life. It belongs to the late geometric period (9th century B.C.) the vessels of which were mostly found in tombs as gems, urns or vessels were used for libations. During this period the vessels are divided in many unequal perpendicular zones with linear decorative motifs rhythmically repeated, covering as much of the surface as possible. The dominating motif here is the meander, which is emblematically connected with ancient Greece and has been the most popular decorative motif due to its dynamism and motion. The artist’s imaginative creative power let him give the handle of the Pyxis the form of uniform horses schematically rendered – as always in Geometric art – serving both the function and the beauty of the form equally.

Handmade, hand painted.
