Ancient Greek Pyxis from Cyclades

Pyxises were jewelry boxes made of clay. They are the most important artistic articles of the Protocycladic period (3000 – 2000 B.C.). As potters did not use a ceramic wheel, these articles and other ceramic artworks were hand made. Their shape and decoration was inspired by everyday activities and of course, nature. Spherical pyxises that are a little bit compressed, bring to mind the image of empty sea urchins. Concentric circles and spirals were the first curvilinear decorative motifs of Protocycladic themes, initially engraved on clay and filled with white material. This practice probably led to painting with white colour later.
